BEIJING, Sept. 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Beside the Burma Road, 568 kilometers away from Kunming, Yunnan Province, an unnamed “driver’s grave” stands quietly in the mountains. Over 80 years ago, more than 3,200 young overseas Chinese from Nanyang (Southeast Asia) bid farewell to their families and, singing “Farewell, Nanyang”, resolutely set out on this perilous road to support China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. They were the Nanyang Volunteer Mechanics. At a time of national crisis, they braved enemy bombings and disease, transporting supplies along the Burma Road—on average, one mechanic perished for every kilometer of the road.
The Asian Century: Farewell, Nanyang
This is a story of homeland, sacrifice, and peace. Today, as we stand before the “Driver’s Grave,” we can still hear the echoes of that history. Peace has never come easily, and the love and pursuit that transcend borders continue on. Decades later, the descendants of the Nanyang Volunteer Mechanics are still searching for their lost relatives…
We now issue a global call for information related to the family of Nanyang mechanic Ye Biantou (or possibly renamed), as well as any other clues about those who perished around the 568 km mark of the Burma Road.
