Discover Helsinki’s Evolving Design and Architecture Scene – in Finland and in Japan

TOKYO, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Helsinki’s rich design and architectural heritage is entering a new phase, with the UNESCO recognition of Aalto Works, the reopening of the National Museum of Finland in spring 2027 and a new Museum of Architecture and Design due for completion in 2030. As Helsinki invites Japanese design and architecture enthusiasts to discover the city and its creative culture, a taste of Helsinki and Finland can already be experienced in Japan through exhibitions, performances and new openings in Tokyo and beyond.

Aalto Works: A UNESCO Legacy of Human-Centred Design

Aalto Works, a collection of thirteen landmark buildings or groups of buildings in Finland designed by pioneering modernist architects Aino, Elissa and Alvar Aalto, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2026. The designation recognises the global significance of their human-centred approach to architecture and the role of design in supporting wellbeing, equality and community life – an influence that continues to shape architectural thinking internationally.

Helsinki is an ideal starting point for experiencing the newly designated World Heritage Site. Five of the thirteen buildings are located in the Finnish capital – the highest concentration within the UNESCO-listed series – offering visitors a unique insight into the Aaltos’ approach to architecture, design and everyday living.

Among them are the Aalto House and Studio Aalto, both located in Helsinki’s Munkkiniemi district and open to visitors. The Aalto House, completed in 1936, was designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto as their family home and office, while Studio Aalto, completed in 1955, was created as a dedicated workspace for Alvar Aalto’s architectural practice. Together, they offer an intimate glimpse into the Aaltos’ everyday life, creative process and approach to architecture and design.

Finlandia Hall – A UNESCO World Heritage Masterpiece in the Heart of Helsinki

Finlandia Hall is one of Finland’s most iconic landmarks and a true masterpiece of architecture and design. Located in the heart of Helsinki beside Töölönlahti Bay, Finlandia Hall is the crowning achievement of world-renowned architect Alvar Aalto and one of the highlights of the newly inscribed Aalto Works UNESCO World Heritage Site. More than a landmark, Finlandia Hall offers a unique journey into Finnish architecture, design, culture, and lifestyle. Every detail of the building, from its monumental marble façade to its furniture, lighting, and interiors, was carefully designed by Alvar Aalto to create a complete work of art.

Following a major renovation, Finlandia Hall has evolved into a vibrant cultural destination open to everyone. Visitors can explore the immersive exhibition dedicated to Alvar, Aino, and Elissa Aalto, enjoy Finnish flavours at Finlandia Café&Wine and Finlandia Bistro, shop for Finnish design products, and even stay overnight in the unique Finlandia Homes apartments located inside the building itself. Finlandia Hall is also Finland’s leading venue for international congresses, concerts, cultural events, and celebrations. Combining timeless architecture, exceptional functionality, and warm Nordic hospitality, it offers visitors an unforgettable experience where design, nature, and culture meet.

The National Museum of Finland Enters a New Era

Long established as one of Finland’s most visited museums, the National Museum enters a new era in spring 2027 following the most extensive transformation in its history. Originally conceived in the late nineteenth century, the museum was created to help define a nation and tell the story of Finnish identity. More than a century later, it continues to ask the same question: how has Finland become the country it is today? The answer is no longer singular, but constantly evolving.

The renewed museum brings together a restored National Romantic landmark by the renowned architectural trio Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen and a bold contemporary extension by JKMM Architects, creating a dialogue between cultural heritage and contemporary design. Together, the buildings form a total work of art where architecture, design, history and contemporary culture meet. More than a museum, the renewed National Museum is a cultural destination and civic space where exhibitions, architecture, events and public life converge. Once created to imagine a nation, it now invites visitors to explore how Finnishness continues to be reimagined. Through exhibitions, events and public dialogue, the museum inspires curiosity, encourages learning and creates new conversations about Finland’s past, present and future.

Architecture & Design Museum Helsinki unveils major transformation ahead of new museum

The Architecture & Design Museum Helsinki is undergoing a major transformation on its journey toward a new museum building, set to be completed in Helsinki’s South Harbor in 2030. Next spring, the museum will launch Designed & Loved, a new concept that will transform its current home on Korkeavuorenkatu, bringing exhibitions, events, and services together into a more seamless museum experience.

At the heart of the renewed museum is an ambitious collection survey exhibition exploring the histories of Finnish architecture and design from multiple perspectives, created for both international visitors and local audiences. Extending across the museum’s exhibition halls, it will bring hundreds of objects from the museum’s collections before the public, many for the first time.

As part of the transformation, the first floor of the Architecture & Design Museum Helsinki will become a welcoming, admission-free space where anyone can stop by, take a break, and find inspiration. The redesigned floor will bring together an expanded Design Shop, a new book gallery, and a new Café Nolita. The museum will temporarily close on 7 January 2027 while the transformation is carried out, reopening on 5 March 2027.

JKMM Architects – Museums as Places for People

Helsinki-based JKMM Architects is behind several major museum projects shaping the city’s cultural landscape. The studio designed Amos Rex art museum, opened in 2018, where underground galleries and the distinctive domed public square bring art, architecture and city life together. JKMM has also designed the new extension to the National Museum of Finland, opening in 2027, with new underground exhibition and event spaces and a year-round public garden. Looking further ahead, JKMM won the international design competition for the new Museum of Architecture and Design, planned for Helsinki’s South Harbour. Across these projects, JKMM approaches museums not simply as places for exhibitions, but as public spaces for people – places for culture, learning, interaction and everyday urban life.
